Battlefield Tour. Liberation of Groningen

Battlefield Tour. Liberation of Groningen

How did the Canadians liberate Groningen?

Part of operation Amherst in April 1945 to liberate the north of the Netherlands and, more accurately , secure the west flank of the Nazi empire.
Groningen is the final major hub before Bremen and major German navy bases like Wilhelmshaven and Emden and shipbuilding industry.
At te time considered by the soldiers themselves as a second tier mission as they also wanted to be the first to reach Berlin the brave men went North to a city they never heard of.

It turned out that the Germans also regarded this old and strategic city as one of the last opportunities to delay the Allied advance.

This tour in either English or Dutch takes you along the route the Canadians took from entering the city limits to the center of the city where the surrender was signed by the commander of the 4000 German soldiers.
